Bahía Concepción (Conception Bay) is a bay within a bay on the Sea of Cortez about halfway down the peninsula. Many travelers plan a grand tour of Baja but get kind of stuck here in the central area–Mulege, Loreto, San Juanico–and not in a bad way! La Paz, Cabo, and Todos Santos can wait for mañana. This rugged paradise is the real “old” Baja that’s so fun to explore. Hike, bike, motorcycle, 4×4, RV, car, kayak, sailboat, or trawl… enjoy the natural surroundings and the friendly, low-stress vibe.

But this area isn’t for everybody. If you like glitter and glam, fancy clothes, staying up all night, and hotels with room service, keep on driving south. The restaurants are filled with locals and expats who couldn’t care less about designer clothes or expensive jewelry. You’ll find most everybody gathered in one place every Friday or Saturday night because the restaurants rotate music and movie nights. With a few exceptions, everything pretty much shuts down at 9:00. We call it Baja midnight.

If you’re heading to Baja to slow down your life, you’ll be happy here. Bring your kayak, buy one from the secondario, or hire one from a local to do a little island hopping. Dig your toes in the sand, sip a cerveza con lima and watch the dolphins pass roll by in lazy arcs in the dark blue-green sea.
